CONEY ISLAND, Aug. 25 -- Big Pupi, a spunky cocker spaniel and candidate for President of Red Sox Nation, has been chosen as this year’s celebrity judge for the Coney Island Kibble Eat Off. Every year the Kibble Convention meets in July to decide who will be offered this coveted position – a decision the members do not take lightly.
“All proceeds from our event go to rescue organizations,” said Pom Pom, the Convention’s MC and alpha Dachshund. “It’s imperative that the chosen celebrity be able to create enough buzz around the competition as possible, to keep donations at their max. There was no question this year as to who would take that title. The vote for Big Pupi was unanimous. Everyone gave him two dewclaws up.”
The event commenced with Big Pupi delivering a touching speech about the real purpose of the Eat Off, urging those in attendance not to forget what really matters. “Sure, kibbles are totally awesome, but let’s not lose scent of what we’re really here for. I’m sure we all have had a time in our lives when we hit a hard patch. When we thought we couldn’t go on. I know I have. And just when our last shred of hope was slipping from our jowls we were saved, and we were loved. Now it’s our turn to rescue someone in need.” Pupi’s speech moved the audience to whines.
Shortly after Pupi's words the countdown began and the contestants had 2 minutes to wolf down their bowls of kibbles. It was neck and neck between the Bull Mastiff and Great Dane, but it was the Akita that emerged from his food bowl victorious. During the event Big Pupi commented, “I’m a little guy with a big stomach, but that is just nuts.” Pupi’s eyes were as round as saucers as he wiped a dribble of drool from his lip. “Someone hand that guy a pooper scooper. Pronto.”
Big Pupi may not have a huge stomach in his lean 20lb frame, but he certainly has the biggest heart. The Eat Off is just one of many charity events he’s attended this year, most of which have supported various rescue groups. “It’s something that’s near and dear to me,” Pupi said, a hopeful look on his face. “It’s time I gave back a little, because I’ve been given so much. It hasn’t always been easy for me, but my life has taken a turn for the better and I want to lend a helping paw... or four.” Proceeds from the sale of shirts, mugs and other items available on his website will be donated.
Big Pupi may be in Coney Island this weekend, but we all should keep an eye on him. “He’s really going places,” said Coney Island Kibble Commissioner Rosco Jenkins, “and he leaves a big pawprint everywhere he goes.”
